How 5 daring people raised over $15,000 for Haiti

In March of 2015, 5 daring athletes took on the challenge of running the 2015 NYC Half Marathon to raise funds for Happy Hearts Fund. It was a lot of hard work and training for the runners but all their effort paid off. All together they raised over $15,000 to help a Happy Hearts Fund project in Haiti at the Charles Moravia School.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the effort of our runners: Laurent, Yasemin, Laura, Heloise, and Gregory. Thank you for working so hard and for making such a HUGE difference in the lives of so many children!

Below is the story of one of our runners, Yasemin, about her experience running for Happy Hearts Fund.

Hi! My name is Yasemin Uyar. I was born and raised in Turkey but I’ve been a New Yorker since 2009. I am a proud member of the Happy Hearts Fund team that ran the 2015 NYC Half Marathon – a 21K race all through the city.

Since it was my first time running a half marathon and my first time fundraising, it was a mixture of both fun and hard work at the same time. With the support from my family, friends, and Happy Hearts Fund, I was able to raise more than the amount I pledged ($1,500) and managed to train for the race in only one and a half months!

Running the half marathon was an amazing experience for me! It was one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2015 so I was very proud that I actually made it happen. The feeling of stopping traffic in Time Square, experiencing one of the most iconic cities in such an extraordinary way, and hearing New Yorkers cheering for me and other runners was one of the most memorable parts of the whole run. The best part, though, was being able to finish the run, despite all the pain, and knowing that my efforts contributed to a good cause. I know that all the money my teammates and I raised together will be very well spent by HHF to change some young lives in an area impacted by the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti. All of the over $15,000 raised by our team will go to help the Charles Moravia school have access to clean potable water.

Would I do it again? Of course! Only if it is a full marathon 🙂 I’ve always thought that fundraising was very difficult and stressful. However my experience with HHF and the NYC Half Marathon completely changed my opinion. I saw that people are more than willing to support a friend, especially when it is for a good cause.
